"The Lighthouse Establishment built the first tower to mark the Diamond Shoals in 1803. It was damaged during the Civil War and rebuilt in 1870. The Coastal Guard automated Hatteras Light in 1936, and, in 2000, the National Park Service arranged to have the tower moved back from the eroding shoreline. The tallest lighthouse in the nation, rising 198 feet, Cape Hatteras Light is the centerpiece of Cape Hatteras National Seashore." Excerpt taken from Lighthouses of the South: Your Guide to the Lighthouses of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, text by Elinor De Wire; photography by Daniel E. Dempster. If you have never been out to the Outer Banks you should really go! The view of the lighthouse up close is wonderful but the view from the top is just indescribable. I went to see it shortly after they had moved it and reopened it to the public, and would love to visit it again.
